Programme

In the year marking the 75th anniversary of Joan Lamote de Grignon’s death, the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra (OBC) remembers a composer and conductor who profoundly influenced Barcelona’s musical life in the early twentieth century. The programme opens with his Poema romàntic (Romantic Poem), sung by Barcelona-born baritone Carles Daza.

Daza is also the soloist in the premiere of a piece by Salvador Brotons, who will conduct the concert. This work is written for baritone, amateur choir and orchestra, in this case with the participation of Coral Cantiga.

The concert closes with Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Third Symphony, the subject of a great deal of gossip at the time. He worked on the composition over the summer at the house of a friend to whom he dedicated it, stoking rumours regarding his homosexuality. It shows the clear influence of another Third Symphony, Schumann’s “Rhenish”, which the Russian composer greatly admired. And the final Polonaise has even been interpreted as a gesture of support for Poland’s independence.
