Alberto Ginastera’s Glosses sobre temes de Pau Casals, written between 1976 and 1977, are a highly personal tribute to the Catalan musician, featuring a succession of re-compositions of original materials, in which the experimental dimension, undeniably difficult at a technical level, intertwines with musical memory.
Created in 2020, Arturo Márquez’s fandango for violin and orchestra is known as an expansive piece of great virtuosity, with a vibrant composition and nods to folk tradition. The score explores the expressive potential of the violin, a challenge that is in good hands with Anne Akiko Meyers. Not only is she a well-established soloist, she also won a Grammy precisely for her performance of this piece.
Antonín Dvořák’s Symphony No. 9 “From the New World” – written, as the popular nickname suggests, during the composer’s time in the United States – will conclude the concert. It is undoubtedly one of the most universal works of the symphonic repertoire. His nostalgic evocation of national spirit and the mastery in handling the forms of the materials have made this symphony into an unparalleled synthesis of culture and emotional expression.
