VIBRATION

Claude Debussy’s musical language, which was close in spirit to the Impressionism art style, makes use of sounds to paint the intangible reality without a subject: that of a vibrational energy that only the soul perceives. Before developing his artistic idiosyncrasy, however, he gave hints to his sensitivity in works such as La petite suite, programmed here in its version for large orchestra, from 1907.

Remaining close to tradition, this piece exudes lyricism in each of its movements, from the initial En bateau (Sailing) to the lively final Ballet. Under the baton of Thomas Søndergård, the OBC is also to perform his Images pour orchestre, a score in which the music seems to encourage -yet neither literally nor descriptively- the contemplating of imaginary landscapes, suggesting that the view always comes from inside, however much the titles refer to experiences that any listener may have had. Between the two pieces, Daishin Kashimoto will take on the solo role in the Violin Concerto No 3 by Camille Saint-Saëns. The work begins with a long performance by the leading role, which at its première in Hamburg in 1880 was performed by Pablo Sarasate. The interpretative challenges that are present from the start take on a rather uncommon virtuous dimension in the ending movement.
