Programme

The taste for exoticism, through cultural manifestations specific to places that were relatively far away, led to a series of works, particularly as of the mid 19th century, that were permeated by melodies or compositional trends. It is true that the Turkish trend had reached Mozart’s Vienna some time before, although it was Romanticism that was to explicitly open its doors to the exploration of differences (clearly from what was sometimes a simplifying, individual stance). Bizet’s Carmen, which premièred in 1875, is a paradigmatic example of such. In fact, Franz Waxman’s fantasy for violin -to be performed by Bomsori Kim- recreates some of its most memorable passages.

The South Korean soloist will also perform Violin Concerto No 2 by Henryk Wieniawski. Premièring in 1862, the romanticism of its expressiveness can be felt from the start, and culminates with the vertiginous allegro with final fuoco, a Gypsy-style rondo. The evocation of foreign atmospheres of delightful sensitivity is found again in Ravel’s famous Rhapsodie Espagnole, in a concert that will also include the presence of the suite from The magic opal by Isaac Albéniz, and the chance to hear a work by Miquel Oliu for the first time – a world première.

Funded by the Ministry of Culture, within the framework of Barcelona’s Capital of Culture, promoted by the Ministry of Culture and Barcelona City Council, and with the support of the Ramon Llull Institute.
