Bedrich Smetana’s symphonic poem The Moldau opens the concert with a powerful evocation of the landscape and the Czech composer’s national identity. Part of the Má vlast cycle, the score follows the journey of the river from its birth to the triumphal arrival in Prague, pausing to depict night-time scenes and folk dances along the way.

The lyrical and strikingly eloquent of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 1 showcases his voice at its most personal. His second contribution to the concerto genre – though it is known as the “first” – will come to life through young David Khrikuli on the piano, singing, sighing and growing while accompanied by an orchestra elegantly outlining majestic scenes that help him soar.

The second part of the concert will feature Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 3. Openly post-Romantic, composed during his exile in the United States, it reveals a style marked by nostalgia. The shadow of the past will coexist, however, with the construction of a luminous present, under the baton of Cristian Măcelaru.
