Programme

The Agony in the Garden of Gethsemane (or the Mount of Olives) is the opening theme of Beethoven’s oratorio, written between 1802 and 1803. It is the first of Beethoven’s three great sacred pieces, before the Mass in C Major and the Misa Solemnis

Between 1787 and 1796, Franz Joseph Haydn composed the music for The Seven Last Words of Christ on the Cross: first in an orchestral version commissioned by the Oratorio de la Santa Cueva in Cadiz, then for string quartet, and finally as an oratorio. An arrangement for piano also exists, conceived by another composer. Jordi Savall once again presents the oratorical version of this piece by Haydn, which sets music to the seven phrases that, according to the Gospels, were spoken by Jesus Christ while nailed to the cross before his death.

This concert is included in the programme of the Festival Ciutat de Clàssica
