pROGRAMME

This programme brings together three distinct expressive characteristics: affability, anguish and overwhelming passion. In a clear example of domestic music, in Dvořák’s Terzetto in C major, the two violins and the viola converse cordially, creating dialogues and gentle correspondences that embody the singable naturalness typical of the Czech composer. In the third of her thirteen string quartets, British composer Elizabeth Maconchy, one of the world’s foremost female composers, captures a sense of austerity, anguish and tension that seem to portend the gloom of the Second World War. Written in a single movement, this quartet stands out for its dense sound, achieved through the use of counterpoint and dramatic contrasts.

Finally, Janáček sweeps us away with his Quartet No. 2 “Intimate Letters”, one of the most passionate works in the chamber repertoire. Inspired by his relationship with Kamila Stösslová and introduced by the viola, his music is visceral, groundbreaking, steeped in emotion and often described as a powerful musical letter expressing overwhelming passion.
