pROGRAMME

Writing for a brass quintet requires ingenuity and mastery of the expressive potential of each instrument. This formation, less common than others, can trace its roots to the Renaissance and Baroque periods with works like Scheidt’s Galliard Battaglia, but it wasn’t until the 20th century that it became more prominent.

In this concert, Montsalvatge’s Questions and Answers offers an agile and rhythmic dialogue between the instruments, the theatrical stage provides the inspiration for Brotons’ Pantomimic Suite, and Farnaby’s Fancies, Toys and Dreams, arranged by Elgar Howard, brings us closer to the refined English music of the 16th and 17th centuries. The brass quintet also allows us to explore styles closer to cabaret, circus and jazz, as can be felt in Horovitz’s Music Hall Suite, a piece full of rhythm and flair that pays tribute to the world of show business, rounding off a varied programme that showcases the versatility and character of this ensemble.
