Programme

Soprano Marta Mathéu from Tarragona is one of Catalonia’s finest musical talents. Throughout her consistent and cross-disciplinary career, she has worked in opera, lied, and oratorio, with a particular interest in Catalonia’s musical heritage. On this occasion, Mathéu will offer us a recital of lied and 20th-century Catalan songs, ranging from an early work by Robert Gerhard —a lied with obvious German influences that the composer wrote at the age of seventeen while studying in Switzerland— to more recent pieces by Mercè Torrents, Josep Cercós and Salvador Brotons. Some of these composers have been inspired by luminaries of Catalan literature, such as Josep Carner, Joan Salvat-Papasseit and Miquel Martí i Pol, while others, such as Jaume Padrós and Ricard Lamote de Grignon, draw on popular folklore. The repertoire also includes Xavier Montsalvatge’s Cinco canciones negras, which incorporate rhythms and melodies from the Caribbean islands.
