pROGRAMME

The experience of the First World War left an indelible mark on the lives of Nielsen, Hindemith and Ibert. The Danish composer was at the peak of his artistic maturity, and the troubling trend of warmongering across Europe influenced him in his later years. Meanwhile, Hindemith and Ibert, who were still young, were required to serve in the military—Hindemith in the German army and Ibert in the French army—which they did as both musicians and soldiers. This life-changing experience inspired them to create a language of their own, blending contemporary avant-garde elements with their distinct and individual styles.

As a result, we have three classic pieces for wind quintet, each showcasing the distinct personality of its instruments and brought to life in this performance by the skilful interpretations of five pivotal musicians from the renowned Barcelona Symphonic Band.
