Programme
One composer, two perspectives on sound engaging with each other through contrast. Haydn’s string quartets No. 1 in G, Op. 77 and No. 3 in G minor, Op. 74 offer an extraordinary parallel between light and shadow, balance and tension, clarity of form and expressive drama. He composed them in Vienna in 1793, upon returning from his first trip to London.
The Modigliani Quartet will take on Quartet No. 1, Op. 77, a work of creative fulfilment marked by structural transparency, a refined approach and an optimism that reveals Haydn’s art at its technical finest. In contrast, the Cosmos Quartet will perform the Quartet No. 3, Op. 74, where G minor is more restless and features sharper rhythmic contrasts and an intensity that hints at new expressive horizons. Listening to them in conversation will allow audiences to appreciate how Haydn transforms the same key into two radically different experiences: a shared sound architecture with divergent emotions and internal trajectories that nonetheless complement each other.
