In Raymond Roussel's novel Locus Solus, a group of curious visitors are given a tour of the palace and gardens of inventor and eccentric collector Canterel. Two of his inventions particularly intrigue them: résurrectine and vitalium, substances that bring the dead back to life.
Fleeting recordings (Registres Evanescents) is a second take on the theme of the fleeting nature of memory, focusing on the obsolescence of its recording and storage systems (files). Using recorded fragments, 31 copies of tape cassettes from the house of the late musician Víctor Nubla, the record is subverted, altered, even falsified, to question how memories are stored, returning them to life, acting as résurrectine and vitalium do, with fleeting hints and traces that merge, become confused and intersect with other desires and mnemonic devices. The piece explores how we can extract something from a file or microcosm and use these fragments to create a new discourse, another context: a possible future.
Escenes, the meeting point for artistic disciplines at L’Auditori, has commissioned this performance as part of the “Death or Return” cycle that is the underlying theme of the 2022-23 season.
This project began in 2022, the result of a partnership between the Museu de la Música, El Graner- Fàbrica de Creació, Gràcia Territori Sonor and Constanza Brnčić and her artistic team, within the framework of the ICUB's Creation and Museums programme.
This second work continues the research done to date into files, memory, and the fragility of the physical supports that store them.
