Program

The Barcelona Emergents Music Festival this year presents more than 30 international talents, four of which debut this weekend with the OBC.We’ll get the chance to hear the cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason who, at only 17 years of age, was the winner of the BBC Young Musicians Competition in 2016, and made his debut with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in the Grand Final at the Barbican in London. Another of the talents presented will be the Catalan baritone Jose Ramon Olivé, winner of the first prize and the audience prize in the Handel Competition in London in 2015. The weekend pianist is Rémi Geniet, recognised as the youngest winner in the history of the Bonn International Competition and also notable for having won the 2nd prize in the Queen Elisabeth Competition 2013 and first prize in the International Horowitz Competition when he was only 20. And to complete the talented line-up we have Ona Cardona, an outstanding Catalan clarinettist, winner of the Primer Palau, among other awards. The concerts will have the same second half, with Fontane di Roma by Ottorino Respighi.

In the first part of Saturday, we’ll listen to the clarinet concerto written by Mozart just two months before his death in 1791, for his clarinettist friend Anton Stadler. We’ll also enjoy Mahler’s Rückert Lieder, five songs with text written by Friedrich Rückert –who also wrote the text for the Kindertotenlieder song cycle– in which he describes the contemplation of beauty. In the first part of Sunday, we have the Concerto for Cello and Orchestra No. 1, which Shostakovich dedicated to Mstislav Rostropovich. The programme will be completed with the Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 1 by Sergei Prokofiev, which the author –at 20 years of age– considered his first mature work.
