Program

One of the most characteristic musical practices of Indonesia is the gamelan, an instrumental ensemble formed mainly of percussion instruments, predominantly metal. Gamelans include gongs, metallophones with plates, drums and –depending on the type of gamelan, its social function and the region– also flutes, plucked string instruments and vocals.

This instrumental ensemble associated with Hindu forms prior to the arrival of Islam, found mainly on the islands of Bali and Java, is an essential part of almost all traditional celebrations, dances and theatrical performances.

The Museu de la Música in Barcelona houses a Balinese gamelan for musical use, based on which Gamelan Barasvara was formed, a resident ensemble at the Museum and dedicated to the study and interpretation of both traditional and contemporary Balinese music.

The ensemble has prepared, together with specialists Kendra Stepputat and A.A.B.G. Krishna Putra Sutedja, a repertoire based on the traditions of Gamelan Beleganjur, a processional ensemble associated with ceremonies related to cremation, purification of the soul and preparing the dead for reincarnation, among others.
