The National Youth Orchestra of Catalonia/strong> was founded in September 1993 under the name of Catalonia Youth Symphony Orchestra (JOSC) and in 1999, changed its name to JONC. Josep Pons conducted the orchestra from its creation until 2001, when Manel Valdivieso took over as artistic director. From the very beginning, JONC’s main aims have been to offer comprehensive orchestral training to young Catalan musicians and to play an active role in their professional development. In addition, the orchestra produces a cultural offering of the highest quality, for a wide audience, with a clear social and educational role.

Program

CATHARSIS
Moving from darkness to light has long been an area of fascination for many of the great composers. The language of chords and harmony is perhaps the context in which many of the most imaginative musicians in history have experienced this voyage of discovery. It may be in part linked to the intimate relationship which exists between the language of sounds and colours; dark harmonies on which the light of tone slowly but surely gains ground (Brahms), before reaching an overwhelming final victory, sometimes expressed with an impetuous outburst (Haydn) and in contrast at times surrounded by bliss and serenity (Bach). Transformation itself as the ultimate goal of artistic expression achieved through rituals, forms and gestures rooted in the cultural tradition which surrounds us and shapes us (Mozart).

The path which music takes through this process is both a supreme challenge and transformational, all manner of opposing poetic forces and energetic rhythmic impulses only add to the beauty and strength of the grandeur which comes through the symbolic yet captivating final joyful expression, which conveys both gratitude and fulfilment (Stravinsky).

At the end of the journey comes the vibrant explosion of dance in almost unbridled ecstasy (Bernstein) that speaks, with a completeness difficult to match, of a new “joie de vivre” and of the immense gratitude of being fortunate enough to be able to share it.

Overcoming an addiction is also a long process with many ups and downs. However, over a period of 20 years, thousands of people have proved to Proyecte Home Catalunya that “rehabilitation is possible”. Since 1995, this organisation has been involved in treatment, prevention and addiction awareness in Catalonia.
