Cassandra Miller, L’Auditori’s guest composer for the entire 2020-2021 season, works on the constant development of appropriations, fragments and borrowings from other music. She starts with a drastically eclectic selection: from recordings of popular or traditional music to ancient scores and manuscripts. Miller always manages to produce a completely new sound proposal full of nuances through intense dilution.
Tracery is a current collaboration project between Miller and the soprano Juliet Fraser. Based on experiences of deep listening to orally transmitted music and its vocal resonance, the two artists experiment with the limits of freedom and vulnerability on stage.
The use of fragments of recordings such as found footage and their extension as structural seeds is the procedure used for both About Bach and Bel Canto, which were composed, respectively, from a fragment of the Chaconne in J.S. Bach’s Violin Partita No. 2 and Giacomo Puccini’s Vissi d’arte, sung by Maria Callas.
