The programme for this concert focuses on music of Italian influences. A highpoint is Capriccio, a free fantasy written by New Zealand composer Janssen, one of today's leading composers for band.
Venetian Spells by Ellerby is a tribute to band conductor Timothy Reynish on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Due to Reynish' links with the city of Venice, the first movement evokes the music of Vivaldi, the second brings to mind Stravinsky who was buried in the said Italian city, the third conjures up Monteverdi, and the last Gabrieli. The concert will open with the Symphonic Prelude written by a very young Puccini when he was finishing his studies at the Milan Conservatory, and a march on a theme from La Bohème, which Admiral Canevaro asked Puccini to compose for the launch of the ship Corazzata Siciliana.
