Program

The Ninth Symphony is much more than the Ode to Joy. And much more than the most important symphony of the Classical era. And much more than the defining moment of a composer. And much more than everything that has ever been written about it. The Ninth Symphony is… the Ninth Symphony. At the time, it was said that Beethoven had gone too far: that nobody could “put up with” an hour of symphonic music. That using a choir at the end of the symphony was a sign of madness. But that they forgave him for everything because he had gone completely deaf. Over the years, however, the work has continued to be performed and audiences have continued to submit to it: the Symphony No. 9 (“the Choral”) ended up being what Beethoven had dreamed: a hymn to brotherhood among men. Listening to it live is an experience that should not be missed.
