Program

Tchaikovsky, who always avoided “musical nationalism”, demonstrated that it was possible to perform a concert for Russian violin whilst continuing to be Europeist: it was inspired by Lalo’s Spanish Symphony, which was composed in Switzerland and premiered in Vienna. Since then it has formed part of the round of Romantic violin concertos, together with those of Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Brahms. The Heroic Symphony saved Beethoven’s life: overwhelmed by the deafness that afflicted him, he threw himself into the composition of this great work —the longest symphony that anybody had written up to that time— and was reborn as a new man with one of the most important works in the history of music.
