BIOGRAPHY

Roderick Cox is an American director based in Berlin who won the 2018 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Award from the US Solti Foundation. Cox has received praise for being a director who "paves the way" ( NBC News ) and has been described as "a trailblazer, a director who will be on the cutting edge" ( Minnesota Star Tribune ).

Upcoming debuts with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Staatskapelle, Birmingham City Symphony Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. In addition, he will return to conduct the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the BBC Philharmonic and the Philharmonia Orchestra.

He has recently conducted for the first time the German Symphony Orchestra of Berlin, the German Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra of Bremen, the symphony orchestras of Malmö, Lahti, Boston and Cincinnati, the New World Symphony Orchestra and the Orchester de Paris, and has also returned to conduct the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the Minnesota Orchestra, the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, and the Aspen Music Festival Chamber Orchestra.

In the opera field, Cox's recent debuts at the Houston Grand Opera, with Pêcheurs de perles (Pearl Fishers), and the San Francisco Opera, with Il barbiere di Siviglia (The Barber of Seville) stand out. He has also recorded Jeanine Tesori's Blue with the Washington National Opera. Last season he returned to the National Opera of Montpellier to conduct Rigoletto and also to make a foray into the symphonic repertoire.

Born in Macon, Georgia, United States, Cox attended the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University, and then studied at Northwestern University, where he earned his master's degree in 2011. In 2013, he was awarded the Aspen Music Festival's Robert J. Harth Conducting Award and has held fellowships with the Chicago Sinfonietta, as part of its Project Inclusion program, and the Chautauqua Music Festival, where he to be a David Effron directing fellow. In 2016, after serving as assistant conductor for one year, Cox was named associate conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra, with Osmo Vänskä at the helm, for three seasons.
