Burnt Friedman is one of Germany’s most established and respected musical artists, with a career spanning more than forty years. Born in Coburg in 1965, he lived in Cologne and Berlin before moving to Porto in 2020.

After studying Fine Arts in Kassel and completing postgraduate studies at the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne, he began releasing his music in the early 1990s. Since then, he has developed a prolific career marked by numerous collaborations, including projects with Jaki Liebezeit, Hayden Chisholm, Root70, Atom™ (as Flanger), Steve Jansen, David Sylvian (as Nine Horses), and more recently João Pais Filipe.

In 2000 he founded his own record label, Nonplace, through which he has released dozens of works and explored new possibilities for programmed music. His work is characterised by a musical language that resists categorisation into genres or styles, with a strong focus on rhythmic structures and the exploration of the boundaries of electronic music.

For seventeen years he collaborated closely with the legendary Can drummer Jaki Liebezeit, developing the Secret Rhythms series, a project dedicated to exploring the laws of rhythm and challenging conventional Western music theory.
