Finnish baritone Arttu Kataja is a trained vocalist from Helsinki and a two-time award winner at the Salzburg International Mozart Competition. Since 2006, he has held a permanent position at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, performing the leading roles in Mozart’s repertoire, as well as Marcello (La Bohème), Sharpless (Madama Butterfly) and Peter (Hansel and Gretel), conducted by maestros such as Daniel Barenboim, Philippe Jordan, Andris Nelsons, Sir Simon Rattle and Omer Meir Wellber.
As a guest artist, he has been invited to perform on international stages such as the Theater an der Wien, the Théâtre du Capitole, the Teatro Municipal in Santiago de Chile, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Strasbourg and Savonlinna festivals, the Finnish National Opera, the Tampere Opera and in Japan, together with the Berlin State Opera. In addition, he has worked on the production of Orlando Paladino under the direction of René Jacobs.
He has performed with renowned ensembles such as the Akademie für Alte Musik, the RIAS Kammerchor, the Freiburger Barockorchester, the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra, the Basel Chamber Orchestra, the Musikpodium Stuttgart, and orchestras such as the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Dresden Philharmonic, the North German Radio Philharmonic (NDR), the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest from the Netherlands.
Recently, he has recorded selections from Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn, Brahms’s Requiem, Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust, Bruckner’s Mass No. 1, and toured with Bach’s Christmas Oratorio. He has performed in Janáček’s The Excursions of Mr Brouček with the London Symphony Orchestra, and made his debut as Germont (La Traviata), Figaro and Capulet in Berlin under the baton of Giuseppe Mentuccia.
