Bluebeard’s Castle is one of the three stage works composed by Bartók, and which the OBC is presenting to its audiences this year. Josep Pons will be bringing us closer to the story of the mysterious seven doors that Bluebeard keeps locked and, on the insistence of his wife Judith, is made to open one by one. This plot served as the basis for Bartók to musically capture the intensity of the feelings that run through the work: love, loneliness, anguish, hope and redemption.

Program

It took years for the opera to be accepted by audiences, but over time it has become one of the most-performed Hungarian works in the world. Folk music with Hungarian roots also features in the Brahms score that opens the programme and in Dvořák’s colourful and fast-paced Slavonic Dances.
