.About 100 musicians in the orchestra and many others in the choir. The enormous forces that Mahler required for his works are not gratuitous: his music is total. And even more so in this work, where the meaning of life and death is considered. The answer, in the form of the symphony.
When someone asked Mahler, “What is a symphony”, the answer was clear: “For me, writing a symphony is to build a world with all the technical means at my disposal. The symphony must be like the world, it must embrace everything.” The Symphony no. 2, premiered 120 years ago, received, just like the First, an avalanche of criticism, but also praise from those who saw in Mahler the future of music. When he completed it, he wrote to a friend: “It is the most important thing I have done.” He was not mistaken: the Resurrection is a major work of symphonic music of all time.
