Program
El Concierto de Aranjuez, by the OBC and guitarist Xuefei Yang. A ballet by Ravel, the famous Gazza Ladra by Rossini and the work by Manel Oltra complete the programme. The great opera composer Gioacchino Rossini was a master at adding a solemn and celebratory accent to each of his works, as we can see in the overture to La Gazza Ladra (The Thieving Magpie), an orchestral master class that combines a military feel with an ironic sense of banal dance. The most frequently-performed work in the history of western music, the Concierto de Aranjuez by Joaquín Rodrigo, can be heard during the performance of guitarist Xuefei Yang. The OBC and Xuefei Yang have just announced the recording of this concert with EMI. And talking of “classics”, Manel Oltra is without a shadow of a doubt a “classic” of Catalan music. A great composer of music for the cobla and sardanes, in orchestral terms his Simfonia Esparsa, a work committed to trends in twentieth-century music, is of huge importance. The programme is completed with Ravel’s descriptive ballet Ma mère l’oye, in which the traditional world of the fantasy of fairytale becomes music.
