Program

Pau Casals' work as a cellist was unequalled: he was one of the most significant and revolutionary cellists in the history of European music. This light has often placed Casals the composer in the shade. El Pessebre is not just another Christmas work and far exceeds the subject of the Nativity: this religious tale is simply the narrative excuse on which Casals conveyed his wishes for universal peace and fraternity. Created over a lengthy period, between 1943 and 1960, the piece has taken the Catalan language all around the planet (including the headquarters of the United Nations). It also serves to tell of one of the most painful episodes in the history of Catalonia: the exile of many intellectuals due to the Spanish Civil War. The text was written by Joan Alavedra, writer, journalist and personal secretary to Presidents Macià and Companys. He was also one of Casals' first biographers, with whom he coincided in Prada de Conflent. This is, then, a work on the fraternity created out of fraternity.
